Christ can be present within Scripture and still remain unseen by the reader. This is one of the mysteries revealed on the Emmaus road. The disciples knew the events surrounding Jesus, yet they did not understand their meaning. Paul described a veil that can remain over the reading of Scripture. The problem is not with Scripture. The problem is perception. Natural understanding can identify names, dates, commandments, geography, and historical events. Spiritual understanding begins to recognize God's purpose beneath those events. The veil is removed “in Christ.” This means Christ becomes the key that brings the larger biblical picture into focus. Sacrifices begin pointing toward His offering. Priesthood begins pointing toward His mediation. Kings begin creating expectation for His government. Temples begin pointing toward God's desire to dwell among and within His people. The hiddenness of Christ does not mean God intentionally prevents people from knowing Him. Rather, revelation requires more than intellectual observation. It requires hearts willing to receive the testimony of the Spirit. The disciples at Emmaus moved from blindness to recognition because Jesus opened both the Scriptures and their understanding. The same process continues today.
