LESSON 1 — THE BURNING HEART The Emmaus Encounter Key Scripture: Luke 24:27, 32
The Emmaus road gives us one of the clearest pictures of how Jesus intended Scripture to be understood. Two disciples were walking away from Jerusalem carrying disappointment, confusion, and broken expectations. Jesus joined them, yet they did not recognize Him. Their problem was not that Christ was absent. Their problem was that Christ was present but unrecognized. Jesus responded by opening the Scriptures. Beginning with Moses and continuing through the Prophets, He explained the things concerning Himself. The written Word became the means through which the living Christ was recognized. Later the disciples said, “Did not our heart burn within us?” Their burning hearts reveal what happens when Scripture moves beyond information and becomes revelation. Truth begins to awaken something within us because we suddenly recognize the Person to whom the Scriptures have always pointed. The Emmaus encounter establishes the governing principle of Christ in All The Scriptures: Christ is not merely found in selected messianic passages. The entire biblical story moves toward Him, reveals Him, and finds fulfillment in Him. Many people can read Scripture and gather facts without recognizing Christ. Emmaus teaches us to read differently. We ask not merely, “What happened?” but “What does this reveal about Christ?” The goal of biblical revelation is not simply knowledge. It is recognition that produces transformation.
