STAGES OF SONSHIP Title: From Child to Heir — The Journey of a Son
INTRODUCTION The journey of spiritual growth is marked by progressive stages that reflect both identity and responsibility. Just as a child grows physically and mentally, spiritual growth is patterned after the development of a son who matures into a father. Paul writes in Galatians 4:1–2, “The heir, as long as he is a child, is no different from a slave… but is under guardians and stewards until the time appointed by the father.” Each stage of sonship prepares believers to walk in their full inheritance and calling.
STAGE 1: NEPIOS (Νήπιος) — “The Infant” Definition: Inarticulate, without understanding; a spiritual infant. Scripture Reference: Galatians 4:1–3 Analogy: Like a newborn, completely dependent, crying out but not yet discerning. Key Trait: Lacks discernment, easily tossed by doctrine (Eph. 4:14). Metaphorical Insight: A nepios son is like a seed still underground — alive, but unseen and undeveloped. Instruction Focus: Teach the importance of nourishment (milk of the Word). Highlight the danger of spiritual vulnerability. Journal Prompt: What are some areas in your life where you still feel like a “spiritual infant”? What would help you grow?
STAGE 2: PAIDON (Παιδίον) — “The Child” Definition: A little child beginning to walk and learn. Scripture Reference: 1 John 2:13 Allegory: A child learning by imitation, yet still requiring boundaries. Key Trait: Beginning to know the Father but still lacks consistency. Allegorical Insight: Like Israel in the wilderness — rescued but not yet responsible. Instruction Focus: Identify patterns of obedience and disobedience. Encourage relationship with the Father. Journal Prompt: Reflect on a time when you obeyed God even when you didn’t fully understand. What did you learn?
STAGE 3: TEKNON (Τέκνον) — “The Teen Son” Definition: A child growing in identity and conviction. Scripture Reference: Romans 8:16–17 Analogy: Like a teen learning to drive—testing limits, yet yearning for independence. Metaphorical Insight: A sapling stretching toward the sun, establishing roots. Instruction Focus: Build identity as an heir, not an orphan. Develop spiritual discipline and response to correction. Journal Prompt: In what ways are you learning to trust God’s correction? How does it shape your identity?
STAGE 4: NEANISKOS (Νεανίσκος) — “The Young Warrior” Definition: A spiritually strong young man. Scripture Reference: 1 John 2:14 Allegory: Like David slaying Goliath — strength proven in warfare. Key Trait: Overcoming the evil one, grounded in the Word. Allegorical Insight: The tree is now bearing fruit, and its roots are deep enough to endure storms. Instruction Focus: Train in spiritual warfare and maturity. Embrace the weight of spiritual responsibility. Journal Prompt: What spiritual battles are you fighting? Where are you seeing victory?
STAGE 5: HUIOS (Υἱός) — “The Mature Son” Definition: Full-grown son, legal heir, representative of the Father. Scripture Reference: Romans 8:14, Matthew 3:17 Analogy: Like Joseph ruling Egypt under Pharaoh — trusted, obedient, and mature. Allegorical Insight: The Son becomes the reflection of the Father — seed matured to full tree. Instruction Focus: Develop a hearing ear to the Spirit. Train others through experience, modeling, and love. Journal Prompt: Who is looking to you as a model of faith? What do you want them to see?
