There is a difference between seeing words and seeing Christ. The Emmaus disciples heard Jesus teach for miles, yet recognition finally occurred when their eyes were opened. Later Jesus opened the understanding of the gathered disciples so they could comprehend the Scriptures. Spiritual understanding therefore involves more than intelligence. It requires illumination. The Holy Spirit does not replace careful biblical study. He enables us to perceive the divine purpose within what we study. Revelation brings recognition, and recognition produces transformation. When Peter recognized Jesus as the Christ, his understanding of Jesus changed. When Thomas recognized the risen Lord, doubt gave way to worship. When the Emmaus disciples recognized Christ, they immediately changed direction and returned to Jerusalem. True revelation moves us. The goal of Scripture is not merely to fill the mind with information about God. It is to form within us the ability to recognize God, respond to Him, and represent Him. Spiritual sight develops through relationship with the Spirit, meditation upon the Word, obedience, humility, and continued exposure to the revelation of Christ. The more clearly Christ is seen, the more accurately the Father can be represented.
