Leviticus can appear difficult because of its sacrifices, priesthood regulations, purity laws, and instructions concerning holiness. Yet beneath these details is a central question: How can a holy God dwell among His people? The sacrificial system provided temporary answers. Offerings dealt with sin, guilt, fellowship, thanksgiving, and consecration. Priests mediated between the people and the presence of God. The Day of Atonement dramatically portrayed cleansing and restored access. All these patterns find fulfillment in Christ. Jesus is both Priest and Offering. He does not merely bring a sacrifice. He becomes the sacrifice. Through Him, access to God is no longer dependent upon repeated animal offerings. His sacrifice is sufficient, complete, and final. Leviticus therefore becomes a revelation of access. Holiness is not merely separation from bad behavior. It is a life set apart for God's dwelling and purpose. Christ brings us near so that God's desire expressed throughout Leviticus can reach fulfillment: “I will walk among you and will be your God.”
Sonship Application: Sons do not live at a distance from the Father. Through Christ they learn to live from access, communion, holiness, and belonging.
